Creating Your First Drill in DrillFlo

This guide walks you through creating your first drill, from setting up a new document to staging performers and playing back your work.


1. Create a New Document

  1. From the DrillFlo Dashboard, click New Design.

  2. Enter a name and any setup details, then click Create.

  3. The Field Editor will open automatically.


2. Understand the Field Editor Layout

  • Center: Performance field (where your drill is designed).

  • Left Panel: Mode Selection — choose tools like Pan, Select, Paint, and more.

  • Bottom: Drill Timeline — manage pages, counts, and tempo.

  • Top Toolbar: Tools for adding pages, controlling playback, and project settings.


3. Add Performers

  1. In the top toolbar, click Performers.

  2. Open the Performer Menu.

  3. Add performers by:

    • Entering the number to add.

    • Assigning a label (e.g., “X” for generic performers or a letter for a section).

  4. Click Add to place them in your project.

  5. Close the Performer Menu.


4. Adjust Field Settings

  1. From the top toolbar, select Project > Field Settings.

  2. Adjust settings such as hash mark placement to match your actual field.

  3. Save changes.


5. Set Up the Opening Set

  1. Switch to Selection Mode:

    • Click the Selection tool in the left panel, or

    • Press 2 on your keyboard.

  2. Select performers:

    • Click and drag across multiple performers, or

    • Click individual performers to select.

  3. Move performers by:

    • Clicking and dragging, or

    • Using the Layout Tools on the right panel.

  4. Rotate selected performers with the Rotate Tool.

  5. Adjust Snap to Grid as needed:

    • Full-step or half-step snapping.

    • Turn off snap for free movement.

  6. Use the Spacing Tool (appears at the bottom) to evenly space selected performers.


6. Draw Formations

  1. With performers selected, switch to Draw Mode:

    • Click the Draw tool in the left panel, or

    • Press 3 on your keyboard.

  2. Choose Draw Path or Draw Shape from the right panel.

  3. To draw a curve:

    • Click your starting point and drag to paint the curve.

    • Release to place performers evenly along it.


7. Add a New Page

  1. Click Add Page in the Drill Timeline.

  2. With the new page selected, update:

    • Tempo — beats per minute.

    • Counts — number of counts between sets.


8. Move Performers on the New Page

  1. Select performers.

  2. Use the Layout Tools to:

    • Align vertically or horizontally.

    • Apply even spacing.

  3. Enable Movement Arrows in the right panel to visualize pathways.


9. Playback Your Drill

  1. Select your starting point in the timeline (e.g., the opening set).

  2. Click Play or press Spacebar to watch the transition between sets.

  3. Adjust performer positions or counts as needed.
